Alfalfa's seeds and leafs are used in traditional medicine. Seeds contain vitamins C, E, B1, B2, B12, chlorophyll and amino acids. While pod's ripening, seeds increase vitamin concentration; this is the time when the amount of nutrients contained raises to their maximum. Leaves are rich with beta-carotenes, vitamins C, D, E, K, niacin, pantothenic acid, biotin, folic acid, and many minerals like calcium, iron and phosphorus. Alfalfa has a very wide spectrum of action. It promotes healing of erosions, ulcers, open wounds, helps to fight infection. Polyols (triacontanol and octacosanol) contained in the plant, reduce cholesterol and blood lipids and flavonoids relax the smooth muscles. Alkaloids help to reduce blood sugar levels, saponins maintain the intestinal flora balance. Alfalfa use increases the elasticity of the arteries, prevents the development of atherosclerosis. Saponins and alfalfa fiber can bind significant amounts of cholesterol; coumarin derivatives have a mild antimicrobial action that strengthens the blood system. Some studies suggest that alfalfa is capable of binding carcinogens in the intestine, especially in the large intestine, and accelerate their excretion from the body.
There is an assumption that the active ingredients of alfalfa can inhibit the development of fungus. Alfalfa has anti-inflammatory properties, which makes its use in cystitis, prostatitis, peptic ulcers, arthritis, and rheumatism, prevents the development of diabetic complications. It promotes healing of erosions, ulcers, wounds, helps to fight infections. In addition, it increases lactation in nursing mothers. Alfalfa has a multilateral action, and therefore can be used for any chronic disease.
